Crank by Ellen Hopkins 537 pages, but it’s written in verse, so there are only a few sentences per page…….very fast read!!
The author’s note at the beginning of Crank is chilling and once the book is read, even more so. This is the story of Kristina, a normal high school student, who makes good grades and has good friends. She goes to visit her father for the summer and meets a boy who is attractive and nice, but into drugs. Once Kristina does drugs with him, she can’t stop, and progresses to more harmful substances. Even after coming back to her hometown, she has to have the “monster”. Her life continues to spiral totally out of control and it is saddening to read that no one stops her, helps her, or reaches out to her. The author’s note says in the beginning, “Crank is, indeed, a monster – one that is tough to leave behind once you invite it into your life. Think twice. Then think again.” An eye-opening novel that every teen should read!!
